Extreme Home Make Over In Texas…With My Parents?

That’s right ABC’s Extreme Make Over Home Edition hit Kemah Texas last week as it’s 7th season of helping needy families rolls on.

According to my inside source (my Mom and one of the volunteers) the episode is this seasons 2 hour finale and helps a family with 9 adopted special needs kids that is recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ike. They deserving family was recently living in a 20 foot trailer…all 11 of them!

Thanks to Ty Pennington and his gang of 1,500+ volunteers that included actress Jessica Alba, members of the Houston Texans and of course my parents the home was finished on time and true to what you see on television they really did have to “MOVE THAT BUS”!

Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce: Advice on Donating to Haiti

BBB Advice on Donating by Text Message to Haiti Relief Efforts

Austin , TX – In the wake of the earthquake disaster in Haiti , many Americans are donating via text message for the first time. BBB Wise Giving Alliance advises donors that giving through text can be a safe and easy way to give, but it is important to use caution. Within days following the disaster in Haiti , it was widely reported that more than $3 million was donated through text messaging to such organizations as the Red Cross and others.

“BBB has not heard of any scams relying on text message donations so far,” said Carrie A. Hurt, President and CEO of BBB serving Central, Coastal and Southwest Texas . “However, this emerging method of donating is open for exploitation by scammers.”

BBB offers consumers the following tips on giving through text messages:
• Confirm the number directly with the source. Consumers should double check the advertised text code directly with the charity they wish their donation to go to if they are unsure.
• Be aware that text donations are not immediate. Depending on the text message service used by the charity, text donations can take anywhere from 30-90 days to be transferred to the designated charity. Consumers who would like the donation to be received immediately by the charity can give online through the charity’s Web site, by calling the charity directly or by sending a check in the mail.
• Review the fine print. When you give to a charity through text message, you might also be signing yourself up to receive text message updates from the charity in the future. A charity should include the details of its text campaign on its Web site so you can see what you’re signing up for and how you can opt out.
• Research the charity. Giving wisely to a charity isn’t just about making sure that the solicitation isn’t coming from scammers. Wise donors make sure their donations are going to charities that are best equipped to help in the relief efforts and will responsibly use the money for its intended purpose.
BBB Wise Giving Alliance has compiled a list of charities which are seeking to provide assistance in response to the earthquake in Haiti and meet BBB Standards for Charity Accountability at http://www.bbb.org/us/haiti-earthquake-relief/

For more information on giving to charities and to check the reliability of a company, visit www.bbb.org.

So it’s NOT a good idea to operate the A/C when it’s cold outside???

It’s a bit tricky to explain in layman’s terms as to why inspectors don’t like to test the A/C when it’s cold outside. After all, wouldn’t it work better if it’s cold anyway? So I’ll try to keep it as simple as possible.     Air conditioning  is not nuclear science, but is nevertheless a complicated system of  components, valves, wiring, and thingamajigs that all play a vital role in conditioning the indoor air. Running an air conditioner when it’s too cold outside will result in an inaccurate test and could potentially damage the costly components at the outside condenser. First, let me clarify any confusion between a couple of terms used frequently; the compressor and condenser are two different components, yet work together. The compressor is a small tank that sits inside that large metal box with a fan outside (condenser).

  1. At the condenser box, the compressor compresses cool freon gas at high pressure.
  2. This gas becomes hot because of the high compression, then runs through the condenser coils and turns the hot gas into liquid because it condenses from cooling air passing thru the coils pulled in by the large fan (the thing that looks like the radiator in your car).
  3. From the outside condenser the hot liquid runs through a narrow circuit of piping to the inside air handler aka, furnace.
  4. The freon liquid runs through an expansion valve inside the air handler, and in the process, it evaporates to become cold gas again.
  5. The cold freon gas flows through another set of coils (evaporator coil) hidden inside the plenum.
  6. The fan at the air handler (furnace) then turns on and blows air across these coils which also turns cold and travels through a maze of ductwork, thru the registers, and into the living space until the thermostat on the wall reaches it’s goal temperature.
  7. The freon gas that has finished passing through the evaporator coil goes back to the compressor outside through a larger pipe called the suction line, and the process starts over again.

Once again. The outside compressor compresses the cold freon gas to hot and high pressure, then the condenser cools it into hot liquid form. If the A/C is turned on under cold weather, the compression and condensation process to make the freon behave as intended can make the compressor work harder and possibly damage it. There are other ways of inspecting a system during the winter, but warm weather is best.
