Does Your Attic Have Proper Insulation?

*Heat is constantly lost or gained in a home. Keeping this loss or gain to a minimum is very important. Insulation can be a big help because it creates a barrier of resistance. The amount of resistance each insulating material has is called its R-factor. The higher the R-factor, the better the insulating power of the material.

*Approximately 30 percent of heat is lost through the attic or roof. If your attic already has insulation, check its condition. If the insulation is water damaged, settled, compressed, or incomplete, consider adding more.

*If your attic is uninsulated, installing recommended levels would be a wise investment. The recommended R-values for existing houses in the Hill Country are 30 for the ceiling and 13 for the walls.

*Attic ventilation is important in every season. A poorly ventilated attic may reach 140 degrees in the summer and can heat the rest of the house. Good ventilation promotes the flow of heat out of the structure, lowering summer cooling costs, maximizing comfort levels, and increasing the life of your roof shingles. In the winter, ventilation helps keep moisture levels low. Low moisture is important because moisture in the attic decreases the effectiveness of insulation and may lead to structural damage in extreme cases.

*Roof ventilators and louvers (also called vents) are the most common devices used to improve the airflow in your attic. Local roofing professionals can check the airstream patterns, vapor barriers, and other factors in your attic to help you improve the energy efficiency of your home.
