3-5-10: Wimberley Area: Burglary: 2900 block Flite Acres: Kicked in front door: Electronics, jewelry and firearms stolen

3-6-10: Buda Area: Burglary and criminal mischief: Camper Clinic, 15885 South IH 35: Cut hole in fence and entered property and broke into 15 camper trailers and damaged 2 others. Stereo systems and televisions stolen

3-7-10: Kyle Area: Burglary: 100 block Red Bird: Rear door kicked in: Computer equipment, safe and camcorder stolen.

Texas State University and San Marcos ISD are on spring break this week. San Marcos Baptist Academy is out this week. This will cause more children to be out and about in the neighborhoods. Please be careful and watch for them on bikes or on foot.

Congratulations to our own Deputy, Laurie Bain who completed a 40 hour basic crime prevention class this past week. In a class of 27 students, Laurie was the top student in the class.

Forbes: Austin Texas best economic recovery in U.S.

Austin Business Journal

The Austin-Round Rock area tied for first on a list of large metros where the recession is easing.

Central Texas tied Washington D.C. in the Forbes.com ranking that compiles job growth and real estate industry improvement, among other indicators. Washington has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, 6.2 percent, and the city produced more goods and services than another other in 2008.

Austin has also maintained relatively lower jobless rates, though the number increased to 7.6 percent last month from 7 percent, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. Statewide, the rate was unchanged at 8.2 percent from December to January, compared to 9.7 percent nationally.

Austin and Washington D.C. also benefit from their high government job generation, according to Forbes. The number of Central Texas jobs increased just shy of 1 percent between 2007 and 2009, more than any other city included in the research.

Dallas came in second on the ranking behind Austin . The number of jobs there are expected to increase more than 7 percent in the next three years. San Antonio and Houston also made the top 10 list.

Job growth projections were based on information from Moody’s. The listing also considered median home sale price changes and Metropolitan Gross Domestic Product.

The annual City of Dripping Springs, Texas Founders Day Festival held in downtown Dripping Springs commemorates and celebrates the founding of our community in 1850 by the Moss, Wallace, and Pound families. The festival promotes cooperation and volunteerism in the community and generates community spirit and recreation.
The festival includes a parade, carnival, arts and crafts, cook off, live music, business booths, petting zoo, and more!  Over 3,500 people are expected at the 2010 Founders Day Festival providing businesses with a great opportunity to meet the public. In recent years, granite has become a popular surface choice for bathroom and kitchen countertops. Granite is beautiful and extremely durable, but some homeowners hesitate to use it because of myths about it being unsafe or difficult to care for. Below, find a list of granite myths dispelled:

1. Granite is absorbent.
Granite qualifies as impervious to water and is actually less absorbent than some solid surface (plastic) products.

2. Granite stains easily.
Granite is resistant to stains. Generally any liquid spilled on a granite top, if wiped up within a few minutes, will not stain. Liquids that do not evaporate, such as oils, will cause stains only if left to soak into the stone.

3. Granite requires a lot of maintenance.
Routine cleaning with a mild soap and water is all that is generally required. Once a year, a reapplication of a penetrating sealer should be performed. It takes only about 15 minutes. Never use abrasive cleaners.

4. Granite’s tiny pores and fissures harbour bacteria.
Bacteria are found everywhere. If they are on a granite top, then they can also be found on a laminate or solid surface top. Use an antibacterial soap to wash your countertop if you are concerned.

5. Granite and marble are essentially the same.
Other than the fact that they are both natural stones and can be polished, granite and marble are otherwise very different. Marble is generally a calcareous stone, formed from oceanic deposits and then compressed under pressure (metamorphosed). Granite, however, is an igneous rock, essentially molten magma, that is cooled and then hardened below the earths surface.

On Saturday, February 13th, at noon, the Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Dripping Springs are hosting a free Valentines Luncheon, honoring all the widows in the Dripping Springs community, not just those at the church. The church is reaching out to the women in our community who might otherwise be overlooked during this weekend of sweethearts. The Deacons, their wives and The Well Youth Group will be serving lunch. Deacon Johnny Hudson, who will serve as the master of ceremony, promises good food, fellowship, and music to mark the afternoon together. The Luncheon will be held in the church Fellowship Hall.
